- Enhancing Assamese NLP Capabilities: Introducing a Centralized Dataset Repository This paper introduces a centralized, open-source dataset repository designed to advance NLP and NMT for Assamese, a low-resource language. The repository, available at GitHub, supports various tasks like sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, and machine translation by providing both pre-training and fine-tuning corpora. We review existing datasets, highlighting the need for standardized resources in Assamese NLP, and discuss potential applications in AI-driven research, such as LLMs, OCR, and chatbots. While promising, challenges like data scarcity and linguistic diversity remain. - CoLRIO: LiDAR-Ranging-Inertial Centralized State Estimation for Robotic Swarms Collaborative state estimation using different heterogeneous sensors is a fundamental prerequisite for robotic swarms operating in GPS-denied environments, posing a significant research challenge. In this paper, we introduce a centralized system to facilitate collaborative LiDAR-ranging-inertial state estimation, enabling robotic swarms to operate without the need for anchor deployment. The system efficiently distributes computationally intensive tasks to a central server, thereby reducing the computational burden on individual robots for local odometry calculations. The server back-end establishes a global reference by leveraging shared data and refining joint pose graph optimization through place recognition, global optimization techniques, and removal of outlier data to ensure precise and robust collaborative state estimation. Extensive evaluations of our system, utilizing both publicly available datasets and our custom datasets, demonstrate significant enhancements in the accuracy of collaborative SLAM estimates. Moreover, our system exhibits remarkable proficiency in large-scale missions, seamlessly enabling ten robots to collaborate effectively in performing SLAM tasks. - Scalable Multi-Robot Collaboration with Large Language Models: Centralized or Decentralized Systems? A flurry of recent work has demonstrated that pre-trained large language models (LLMs) can be effective task planners for a variety of single-robot tasks. The planning performance of LLMs is significantly improved via prompting techniques, such as in-context learning or re-prompting with state feedback, placing new importance on the token budget for the context window. An under-explored but natural next direction is to investigate LLMs as multi-robot task planners. However, long-horizon, heterogeneous multi-robot planning introduces new challenges of coordination while also pushing up against the limits of context window length. It is therefore critical to find token-efficient LLM planning frameworks that are also able to reason about the complexities of multi-robot coordination. In this work, we compare the task success rate and token efficiency of four multi-agent communication frameworks (centralized, decentralized, and two hybrid) as applied to four coordination-dependent multi-agent 2D task scenarios for increasing numbers of agents. We find that a hybrid framework achieves better task success rates across all four tasks and scales better to more agents. We further demonstrate the hybrid frameworks in 3D simulations where the vision-to-text problem and dynamical errors are considered. - From Noisy Fixed-Point Iterations to Private ADMM for Centralized and Federated Learning We study differentially private (DP) machine learning algorithms as instances of noisy fixed-point iterations, in order to derive privacy and utility results from this well-studied framework. We show that this new perspective recovers popular private gradient-based methods like DP-SGD and provides a principled way to design and analyze new private optimization algorithms in a flexible manner. Focusing on the widely-used Alternating Directions Method of Multipliers (ADMM) method, we use our general framework to derive novel private ADMM algorithms for centralized, federated and fully decentralized learning. For these three algorithms, we establish strong privacy guarantees leveraging privacy amplification by iteration and by subsampling. Finally, we provide utility guarantees using a unified analysis that exploits a recent linear convergence result for noisy fixed-point iterations. 3 authors · Feb 24, 2023
12 Position: The Current AI Conference Model is Unsustainable! Diagnosing the Crisis of Centralized AI Conference Artificial Intelligence (AI) conferences are essential for advancing research, sharing knowledge, and fostering academic community. However, their rapid expansion has rendered the centralized conference model increasingly unsustainable. This paper offers a data-driven diagnosis of a structural crisis that threatens the foundational goals of scientific dissemination, equity, and community well-being. We identify four key areas of strain: (1) scientifically, with per-author publication rates more than doubling over the past decade to over 4.5 papers annually; (2) environmentally, with the carbon footprint of a single conference exceeding the daily emissions of its host city; (3) psychologically, with 71% of online community discourse reflecting negative sentiment and 35% referencing mental health concerns; and (4) logistically, with attendance at top conferences such as NeurIPS 2024 beginning to outpace venue capacity. These pressures point to a system that is misaligned with its core mission. In response, we propose the Community-Federated Conference (CFC) model, which separates peer review, presentation, and networking into globally coordinated but locally organized components, offering a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient path forward for AI research. 6 authors · Aug 6 2
1 MoDeST: Bridging the Gap between Federated and Decentralized Learning with Decentralized Sampling Federated and decentralized machine learning leverage end-user devices for privacy-preserving training of models at lower operating costs than within a data center. In a round of Federated Learning (FL), a random sample of participants trains locally, then a central server aggregates the local models to produce a single model for the next round. In a round of Decentralized Learning (DL), all participants train locally and then aggregate with their immediate neighbors, resulting in many local models with residual variance between them. On the one hand, FL's sampling and lower model variance provides lower communication costs and faster convergence. On the other hand, DL removes the need for a central server and distributes the communication costs more evenly amongst nodes, albeit at a larger total communication cost and slower convergence. In this paper, we present MoDeST: Mostly-Consistent Decentralized Sampling Training. MoDeST implements decentralized sampling in which a random subset of nodes is responsible for training and aggregation every round: this provides the benefits of both FL and DL without their traditional drawbacks. Our evaluation of MoDeST on four common learning tasks: (i) confirms convergence as fast as FL, (ii) shows a 3x-14x reduction in communication costs compared to DL, and (iii) demonstrates that MoDeST quickly adapts to nodes joining, leaving, or failing, even when 80% of all nodes become unresponsive. 5 authors · Feb 27, 2023
