Ren Zhengfei: China’s AI future and Huawei’s long game

There's a common belief that in order to create a long game, one must continually think about and strategize the future. New York-based investment banker Jeff Yass most famously profited from his long-term vision when he correctly predicted a future where stocks and indexes would soar in an era of Wall Street greed. But, when it comes to Ren Zhengfei, CEO of Huawei, it seems that playing the long game doesn't mean agonizing over every detail of the future.

In an interview with Chinese media outlet People’s Daily, when Zhengfei was pushed for his thoughts on AI in China and the hurdles that face his company, he simply stated, "I haven’t thought about it, it’s useless to think about it." Surprisingly, Ren Zhengfei, a self-made man hailed as one of the fathers of modern China, has been able to play his card and reap the rewards of strategic long-term planning without stressing over every potential opportunity.

Just like these statements, Ren’s long-term focus of not thinking about it can be incorporated in real life situations as well. With the fast pace of competitive and changing markets and technology today, it is plausible to believe that it might not always be practical to consistently be worried about the short-term shifts in the market.
