Cloudflare will now, by default, block AI bots from crawling its clients’ websites

Cloudflare, a leading internet infrastructure services provider, has recently announced that all of its clients' websites will now, by default, block AI bots from accessing and crawling their content. This step is taken to protect its clients from the increasing prevalence of AI-based threats.
In a recent statement, the company confirmed that its decision to block AI bots by default has been primarily driven by the recognition of the specific threats that these types of software bots pose to its client websites. The unauthorized access and excessive search activity from AI bots could consume excessive amounts of data storage and processing power, which in turn, could cause website performance degradation and potential shutdown.
While the blocking of these AI bots is the default setting, Cloudflare also allows its clients the flexibility to manually enable or disable AI bots on a case-by-case basis. This flexibility gives companies the ability to better manage their content and traffic, ensuring that only trusted AI bots gain access to their data.
In addition to the default blocking of AI bots, Cloudflare also announced the introduction of a new "pay-per-crawl" service. This feature provides clients with an option to receive financial compensation in exchange for allowing trusted AI bots to access their content. The pay-per-crawl service gives clients an additional layer of monetization, while still maintaining complete control over which bots have access to their content.
A number of tech industry experts have hailed Cloudflare's move as a significant step towards better protecting the internet against the growing threat of AI-based attacks. With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology, the rise of AI bots has grown, often performing large-scale scans and attacks that drain resources and compromise security.
