Meta’s “AI superintelligence” effort sounds just like its failed “metaverse”
It’s the buzzword du jour, isn’t it? The term “metamorphosis” seems to feature quite consistently in the technological landscape. As it turns out, Meta’s efforts to transform mankind through its AI superintelligence project do mirror somewhat, the mammoth project that was the “metaverse”. The timing is just a dash over two years ago.
After much fanfare and claims of revolutionising human-interface communication, Zuckerberg and his team at Meta announced the commitment of billions towards a ‘metaverse’, a shared virtual environment. However, a few years after the announcement, the metaverse seems to have dwindled into a gargantuan void-an expensive, delayed, and overhyped project.
And now, Meta is back with their new AI superintelligence project. Comparisons are being drawn everywhere. After spending heavily on developing virtual reality hardware, software, and creating avatars, Meta's recent AI experiments seem eerily similar to their previous attempts at metaverse development.
To set the record straight, however, the two efforts are different in various ways. While the metaverse aimed to create a realistic digital version of the physical world, the AI superintelligence leans more towards the artificial intelligence arena. In this respect, Meta's AI supers intend to "make AI that's better at learning and problem-solving".
However, when viewed closely, the AI super projects play out like a reinvented version of metaverse. After all, aren’t artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural networks- the tech buzzwords of today- essentially the science and technology that once brought of the metaverse?
Those familiar with tech gush talk know the pattern all too well. For a while, it was the metaverse; now, it looks like it's time for AI superintelligence. Time will tell how
