Artificial intelligence (AI) is invading every aspect of our lives. Whether it's the smart personal assistants on our phones, cars that take care of their own parking, curated YouTube recommendations, or targeted advertising on social media, AI is everywhere. And that's just the beginning.
It's tempting to think of AI as the ultimate innovation in terms of energy consumption - but the truth is, the energy impact of AI is still relatively small compared to the entire world demand for energy. A recent report by the University of Oxford and the International Energy Agency concluded that the advancement of AI technology accounts for less than 1% of electricity usage, with data centers consuming about 1% of the world's total energy.
That might just sound like a rounding error in terms of overall energy consumption, but the inclusion of AI in our lives is just a few baby steps away from the next generation of AI being the norm. If things go as expected, the future will need a lot more energy to power advancements in AI.
This is where you and I come in. How the energy industry, AI, and climate fields collectively respond to the challenge presents a scale that may turn out even larger. Some good questions to ask are - will there be enough clean electricity to power AI and more importantly, enough water and cool air to cool the data centers that support this technology 24 hours, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year?
More brains and more technology are good things. Data centers' energy efficiency is improving all the time. However, there are important questions that an entire community - from engineers to policymakers, economic specialists to climate researchers, and of course ordinary citizens like you and me-- must address.
