It’s too expensive to fight every AI copyright battle, Getty CEO says
There's no denying that the world is rapidly advancing with technological breakthroughs. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is one area that is growing at an unprecedented rate. Developers and companies are investing heavily in AI advancements, with the results already becoming evident in various sectors.
As the use of AI technology expands, so too does the potential for conflicts over copyright issues. One such company that found out the hard way is Getty. Getty Images is a prominent name in stock image services and was involved in an extensive copyright battle with a company that used AI to generate an identical image of Getty's copyrighted image. This prompted Getty to spend 'millions and millions' into one lawsuit alone. At the end of the day, after such a substantial investment, the company was only able to get a mere slap on the wrist for the other company.
In his recent interview, Getty Images CEO asked how companies can afford to fight each and every AI copyright battle that arises. He went on to question whether companies could possibly hold their ground against a potentially loaded tech giant, who not only has the resources to fund extensive legal proceeds, but also the capacity to exploit the situation, and come out on top.
It seems that the extent to which AI technology is used, especially when it comes to copyright issues, is a matter of concern. On the one hand, it is a wonderful technological innovation; on the other hand, its misuse can potentially cause significant disputes. It is indeed a double-edged sword.
Companies, like Getty, must now be more careful and strategic when it comes to copyright infringement and argue that it might not be practical to fight in every case. This change brings a great deal of worry to the creative community, who have long relied on copyright laws for protection of their work.
