With the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it becomes increasingly hard for the average person to discern fact from fiction. College students, in particular, have become hooked on the advanced features of ChatGPT, a remarkably capable AI model. They use it for a range of tasks, ranging from content creation and editing to essay-writing and even programming. Educators have been struggling to keep up with increasingly sophisticated forms of academic cheating enabled by this technology.

Separating AI reality from hype-filled fiction can be an arduous task. This is why we created the AI Hype Index: an easy-to-understand, at-a-glance summary of everything you need to know about the state of the AI industry. By keeping track of AI innovations, we aim to provide clarity on what technology is genuinely transformative, and what are merely passing fads or exaggerated claims.

Currently, the large language models—developed software applications that have the ability to perform human-like natural language processing—confidently present their responses as accurate and reliable. However, numerous studies have shown that these models sometimes fail to provide reliable information. This is because these models are only as accurate as the data they're trained on, and the software improvises when faced with questions outside the scope of its initial training.

Therefore, it's crucial to differentiate between actual advances in AI technology and overhyped claims. By doing so, users can make informed decisions about which technologies are best for their purposes, and educators can better address the challenges posed by the advanced features of AI models like ChatGPT. Will chatbots eventually outpace other applications? And will human-like conversations with machines eventually render human intelligence irrelevant, as some sci-fi stories suggest?

These are the questions that we must ask as the AI Hype Index continues to ev
