The Pentagon is gutting the team that tests AI and weapons systems
A bizarre mix of misfit strategies seems to be the theme of this year's budgeting cycle. With the Trump administration making sharp cuts in a wide variety of federal budget areas, the Pentagon is following its lead in one area: gutting a dedicated army of individuals whose job is to assess and evaluate the safety of weapons and AI systems.
This comes on the heels of Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's uncompromising announcement that he would be dismantling a crucial department within the Department of Defense (DoD) responsible for such tasks. These analysts are responsible for rigorously testing and scrutinizing any incoming weapons technology or AI systems to ensure they are safe and effective. However, it seems their jobs are no longer deemed necessary.
What is the motivation behind this move, some might ask? Well, the justification being provided is to bring about greater efficiency by streamlining procedures. This is akin to taking out half the safety features of an automobile because it might get people to their destination a little quicker. Rather than saving money, both short term and long term, this move might actually amount to throwing away cash on quixotic ventures that don’t work in the first place.
Pundits are left baffled at this self-inflicted wound of priorities. Just when the world is making bigger strides in AI technology, it seems the US military is taking one step back. One can’t help but wonder whether national security is really being prioritized when the very institutions designed to keep it safe are being gutted.
Essentially, this is a devastating blow to the good old American way of conducting affairs. At a time when the world is scrambling for AI advancements, it seems like the US is actively sliding down the slippery slope, one department at a time. We can only hope that this move
