Wikipedia, the world’s largest online encyclopedia, has temporarily suspended its AI-generated summaries after an internal revolt by editors. The decision comes as a response to concerns raised by several staff members about the potential negative impacts of AI as well as accusations of plagiarism, misinformation, and lack of accountability.

The development of AI-generated summaries was first introduced during the 2024 Wikimedia conference, where conversations sparked around the future of this new technological tool. While it was initially acknowledged as a potentially valuable resource, concerns quickly arose regarding the ethics surrounding its use and adherence to Wikipedia's editorial guidelines.

Some editors raised questions about plagiarism, claiming that many of the summaries appeared to be direct lifts from existing articles, completely bypassing the human component which should embody the essence of our beloved online platform. The lack of attribution was seen as a direct violation of Wikipedia's standards.

Others focused on the issue of responsibility: who would be held accountable for any inaccuracies produced by the AI system? With machines able to generate content at a rapid pace, it became clear that there was no way to track edits, leading to the risk of misleading or false information spreading unchecked.

Lastly, theSummaries project was also viewed as a threat to editorial control of content. The fear was that AI would 'take over', reducing human involvement to a minimum, a concern that led to organized resistance from some quarters.

In light of these valid points and the resulting internal revolt, the decision was taken to temporarily pause the implementation of AI-generated summaries in Wikipedia. It will give the organization ample time to review the project, ensure compliance with their editorial guidelines and address concerns surrounding accountability, attribution, and the preservation of human involvement.
